The setting is located in the Glanrhyd area of Ystradgynlais. The nursery setting occupies the first three classrooms of Ysgol Bro Tawe. The school was built in 2012 and is set in glorious grounds in the Upper Swansea Valley. We offer an extensive range of childcare services for children between the ages of 0 and 12 years. In addition, Little Steps delivers the 10 hours per week of funded education offered by Powys County Council as well as the remaining 20 hours of the Welsh Government Childcare offer in the form of childcare.

The Nursery
The Ystradgynlais Nursery is registered to provide care for children from 0 months to 12 years of age and is able to provide 61 childcare places:
Age 0 – 2 years – 9 places
Age 2 – 3 years – 24 places
Age 3 – 12 years – 28 places
Activities are delivered based on the ethos of the Foundation Phase Curriculum in Wales here at the nursery. This is delivered within a structure that maximises the personal interests of each child. We deliver the 3+ funding for children for 10 hours per week the term following their third birthday.
Also, we offer the 20 free hours of childcare for 48 weeks of the year.
When your child does enter full-time education, Little Steps continues to support you via the provision of the following services.
The setting provides care through the primary language of English and incidental welsh in used throughout.
Breakfast Club – from 7:30 – 9:00am each day
After School Club at Little Steps – 3:00 pm – 6:00 pm.
Clwb Joio! – a more informal holiday club setting based around the wishes and interests of the children. This does include extra-curricular activities and outings. This service is for school holidays and inset days.
School runs to local schools.

The day-to-day management of the nursery is given to the Nursery Manager. The Manager is responsible for ensuring that each day runs smoothly according to the Statement of Purpose and the Daily Operational Plan.
All activities at Little Steps are delivered primarily through the medium of English but incidental Welsh is encouraged as well as specific activities provided to meet the criteria as set out in the Foundation Phase Curriculum in Wales.
We do not currently have pets or animals at the setting. This is in line with the policy of the school to which we are attached.
Trips and Visits
We organise a range of trips and visits and play outside throughout the year. Babies go for walks daily, and older children are given the opportunity to visit places of interest such as the library, the park or the local shops. Spontaneous walks occur when staffing ratios allow.
Learning Environments
The nursery is organised into separate units according to the ages of the children, offering environments in which to learn and play.
Little Explorers
The Explorers Room is dedicated to children under the age of 2. This area contains a sleeping area, tables for mealtimes, space for activities and stimulating equipment.
Ages 0-24 Months
Little Discoverers
The Discoverers Room is equipped for children between the ages of 2 and 3 years. This includes equipment for toilet training as well as sleep equipment such as beds, blankets, and pillows.
Ages 24-36 months
Little Inventors
The Inventors Room is dedicated to children age 3-11 years 11 months. The room is equipped to deliver Foundation Phase based activities and has access to the outside play area.
Ages 3+
Ystradgynlais Staff
The nursery is staffed by qualified early-years practitioners. Our ratios are within those required by the CIW (Care Inspectorate Wales). These are:
Children under the age of 2 – 1 adult: 3 children
Children aged 2-3 years – 1 adult: 4 children
Children Age 3+ – 1 adult: 8 children
Children Age 8 + – 1 adult: 10 children
