Mark Making Activities

Activities

Young children are very creative beings: throughout the day we give children many opportunities to explore their creativity. People often presume that being creative should have an end result; however, we believe the adult should not determine the outcome of the experience for the child. The adult’s role is to provide for and to scaffold the children in their learning. We believe that the learning processes children go through in their play and activities are more important than the end product.

Play opportunities are provided for the children by familiar staff who observe and record the children’s interests and patterns of learning. Activities are specifically designed to meet each child’s individual needs and interests. At Little Steps we have a wide variety to toys and equipment to encourage your child to explore the world in their own time. We have IT equipment, dress up, construction toys and plenty more. Each child has access to wellies and waterproofs at nursery, so we don’t let the weather hold us back from outdoor fun. We have our own play yard at the nursery as well as access to the wider property of Ysgol Bro Tawe for walks and exploration.

The Welsh Curriculum

The Welsh Curriculum

How does this all fit into the Early Years Foundation Phase in Wales Curriculum? We plan ahead for ALL children using the ‘SEVEN AREAS OF LEARNING’ to ensure that stimulating and age appropriate activities are provided on a day to day basis. Each room has a planning sheet which is clearly displayed on the wall. This is displayed beside the daily room routines (See Below). All children have their own Foundation Phase Profile which is a working document to monitor children’s development. Alongside the profile staff complete comprehensive books which we call Learning Journeys. These are celebrated and shared with families at every convenient time. The Learning Journeys are given to families as their child moves on to the next stage of their educational life.
