Mealtimes are seen as an important social time within the nursery. Children are encouraged to develop independence and social skills by choosing, selecting, pouring, cutting and serving for themselves and others. Menus are rotated regularly and take into account the nutritional needs of young children and any allergies or dietary requirements there may be.
The children are seated in small groups, with an adult present to encourage and support them. Younger children who need assistance in cutting will always be presented with the complete meal before it is cut. Once the children have reached the age of two, they will be encouraged to help set tables, and serve themselves and others.
The cost of all food, drink and formula milk is included in the fees. Expressed breast milk can also be stored and given.

Healthy, Nutritious Food
Our menus have been written in line with the ‘FOOD and Health Guidelines for Early Years and Childcare Settings’.
At Little Steps we are part of the Neath Port Talbot ‘Healthy and Sustainable Pre-School Scheme’. This gives us guidance in all areas of nursery life. We have successfully completed the module ‘Nutrition and Oral Health’ (Sept 2012) therefore we are confident in the menu that we offer. Please see below for comments made by inspectors in July 2012.
Breastfeeding Welcome Scheme
We display a welcome sign on our door to inform customers that mothers are encouraged to breastfeed their baby on our premises.
